1st Teams Winning Start

In terrible conditions we were lucky to get any kind of game at Pandy Park today, it was Brynamman who started the brightest scoring the games first and only try with only a minute on the clock, the Brynamman forwards bursting through the middle for prop Daffyd Hopkins to get the ball over the line, full back Chris Moore adding the conversion to give the away side an early 7 - 0 advantage. With the conditions making handling difficult this was never going to be a classic game of rugby and it took Tondu twenty minutes to open their account when outside half Paul Smithson landed his first penalty, the wind and rain controlled this game in many respects, but you have to hold your hand up to both sets of players for trying to play rugby. Smithson added another penalty for the home side before the break H.T. Tondu 6 Brynamman 7 The second half was almost all Tondu and some depth kicking out of hand from Smithson put his forwards in some wonderful positions, but the end product just eluded them today and the final result came down to a 70th minute penalty from Paul Smithson although the Tondu forwards must take credit for the way they bossed that second half to squeeze a 9 - 7 opening day victory. Next Saturday Tondu make the short trip up to Maesteg Quins for a 2-30 kick off, lets hope for better weather and more to write about
